There Are Ways To Recover from Orofacial Pain

There Are Ways To Recover from Orofacial PainOrofacial pain is characterized by pain around your face, mouth, and jaws. It is, in most cases, a symptom of an underlying problem, and many causes are associated with this type of pain. Therefore, understanding the source of your pain is vital before you can receive treatment. This way, you will prevent any underlying condition from becoming worse.

Causes of Orofacial Pain

According to studies, more than 90 percent of orofacial pain is caused by dental conditions. These include toothaches and abscesses. Temporomandibular disorders, TMD, also have a link with orofacial pain. Other causes include facial trauma, arthritis, and postoperative pain. If your orofacial pain is due to a dental condition, you may experience tooth sensitivity or severe pain during chewing, especially if you have a tooth cavity or infection. TMD is the cause of your orofacial pain, and you will likely experience jaw immobility and popping or clicking sounds when you open your mouth to speak, yawn, or bite food. You will also experience earaches, ringing ears, and headaches.

Treatment of Orofacial Pain

The treatment and recovery of orofacial pain is dependent on the cause. When you visit us for diagnosis, we will conduct a history check of your condition to establish the cause before administering treatment. If your orofacial pain is due to a dental problem such as cavities or infections, we will recommend restoration procedures such as dental fillings, crowns, and root canals. In TMD-related orofacial pain treatment, we will train you on minimal jaw movement to deal with the pain. We will also recommend interventions such as stress management if your TMD links to stress. Finally, we will prescribe medication to treat the underlying cause and manage the pain. By identifying and treating the cause of your TMD, the pain will fade a few days once you start treatment.
