Why Do We Recommend You Rinse with Salt Water After Oral Procedures? After having an oral procedure, we always recommend that you rinse your mouth with saltwater. Some people find this unusual with the thought that saltwater can hurt the surgical area. Saltwater is very crucial in the recovery process after undergoing an oral procedure. This is because it has natural healing properties that are very important in your recovery.

Why Salt Water is Important

Naturally, salt contains healing properties that assist with the recovery in your mouth after an oral procedure. It is particularly helpful after undergoing tooth extraction. Saltwater increases blood flow in your mouth, which is vital for quicker recovery. Furthermore, saltwater helps get rid of bacteria in your mouth. It does so by making it difficult for spores to breed. This helps keep the levels of bacteria low and prevent possible infections after an oral procedure.

Furthermore, salt is readily available, and you can prepare saltwater at home. You can easily mix up a solution and clean your mouth by rinsing it whenever necessary. It is important to be gentle when swishing because your mouth is tender and sore from the procedure.

To make a saltwater rinse, all you will need is warm water and salt. Start by adding half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water. Then, take small sips and swish the solution around your mouth for around ten seconds. Spit it out after. You should do this gently twice a day after your surgery. This should be done three to four times for the best results. Saltwater is essential in keeping your mouth clean. It is a reliable alternative to flossing and brushing; however, always ensure you brush your teeth gently when recovering. Contact our offices for more information on the importance of saltwater.
