When Is Oral Surgery Critical and Necessary?

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Office
When Is Oral Surgery Critical and Necessary?Oral surgery is the surgical procedure around the mouth, jaw and is done by an oral surgeon and one trained to deal with oral surgeries. There are many kinds of oral surgeries such as root canal, extraction. Some oral surgical procedures include jaw repositioning and others removal of a tumor. Oral surgeries can be performed by periodontists, prosthodontists, endodontists, and even an orthodontist.

When I need oral surgery

If you have a procedure that a general dentist will not do, the dentist will refer you to a dental specialist. Such procedures might be jaw procedures or tooth surgery that will require a surgical procedure. If you have impacted teeth, then an oral surgeon will be the one to remove them. Gum disease, grafting, and having implants will require you to have oral surgery. These kinds of surgeries are done by dental experts since a general dentist will not do the surgery.

Dental implants

This is one great reason you will need an oral surgeon, the implant procedure is complex since it involves tooth extraction first, if you do not have enough bone mass to support the implant it will need grafting to be done. Grafting is a procedure that adds the jawbone density so that the implants can be attached. The implants are attached to the jawbone using tiny titanium screws that support the implants to the jaw. This process will need a surgeon who will screw them in. Our dental team will first determine if you are a candidate for dental implants, grafting, or any other surgical procedure.
