What is a Sinus Lift?

Posted on 11/21/2022 by Oral Surgery Specialists of Austin
What is a Sinus Lift?A sinus lift is a surgical technique that aims to increase bone in the upper part of the mouth. In this way, the surgeon achieves an adequate bone base by placing the dental implants in cases where the patient does not have sufficient height or bone volume.

Furthermore, to achieve this, the surgeon lifts the membrane that covers the bone of the Sinus creating a space between the maxillary bone and the membrane and then places the material for the graft.

Reasons for the Sinus Lift

Sinus lift increases the bone height of the molars and premolars of the upper jaw since the size of the bone decreases after the loss of these pieces. Also, this procedure is necessary as a previous step to placing dental implants.

When bone height loss is limited, the dentist performs a sinus lift through the socket prepared for the implant. Sometimes, the surgeon places the implants in the same intervention in which the dentist performs the sinus lift procedure.

Is there an alternative to Sinus Lift?

Alternative options to this type of surgery are typically short implants, which surgeons place in the residual bone under the Sinus membrane. However, in cases where the patient does not want to undergo this intervention, it is best to consult with your trusted expert specialist.

Risks of a Sinus Lift Procedure

Risks associated with this procedure include the perforations and tearing of the sinus membrane. However, this tear is repairable, but the sinus membrane should be allowed to heal before performing another lift in the case of larger perforations. In addition, a sinus infection is another risk during this procedure.

In conclusion, sinus lift surgery is essential in adding height to the bones of the upper jaw and placement dental implants. However, the patient should seek dental consultations for further options.
