Benefits of Dental Implants
Austin, TX

Diagram of a dental implantIt is common knowledge that once a permanent tooth is removed from the oral cavity, it cannot be replaced naturally. However, there are a number of ways in which a missing tooth can be replaced in dentistry depending upon the case, age, requirements and budget of the patient. The most effective of all these treatments is a procedure known as dental Implant placement.

Dental implants are artificial teeth that replace both the crown as well as the root of the missing tooth in its socket. There are three components or parts of a dental implants. The topmost portion is known as the crown, the second component, which acts as a seat for positioning and stability for the crown, is called the abutment, and the lowermost portion which replaces the missing root is referred to as the implant.

Unlike other methods of missing tooth replacement, implants have a success rate of up to 97% in most cases when performed by qualified, experienced surgeons. Some of the most prominent benefits of opting for dental implants include:
•  Excellent strength to withstand all intra-oral forces
•  Structural stability
•  Functions exactly like and resembles natural teeth
•  Prevents degeneration of bone surrounding the missing tooth
•  Osseointegration between implant and bone strengthens surrounding supporting structures
•  Maintains facial tone and prevents premature sagging of the skin
•  Replacement of crown and root of single missing tooth or multiple teeth
•  Can support dentures or prosthetic appliances if required

There are however a few considerations that must be taken into account before deciding to get dental implants. The procedure is invasive and therefore the decision to proceed with the treatment is made after careful evaluation of the patient’s family and medical history to make sure you are a good candidate for implants. Another factor to consider is that the treatment is more expensive than other common means of missing tooth replacement; and because it also falls under the cosmetic dental rehabilitation category, many insurance companies may not offer coverage for it.

Conventional dental implant placement may take several sittings spanning up to three months for completion. The procedure involves creating an incision on the ridge at the site of the missing tooth. The implant is then placed into the socket and covered with soft tissue to allow osseointegration to take place. Radiographs are taken to determine whether the implant has successfully fused with the surrounding bone and then the abutment is loaded onto the implant. With the abutment in place, a ceramic or porcelain crown that matches the shade of the natural dentition is fitted on top.
